The Danish international, who joined from AC Milan for £3m during the summer, had feared he could be out for anything up to four months after failing to recover from a knock he picked up against Charlton two-and-a-half weeks ago.

But further examination has revealed that the 27-year-old does not need constructive work on his knee-bone, and a simpler procedure, cleaning the knee should suffice. He will undergo this surgery on Monday.

In Laursen's absence, Mark Delaney will continue to partner Olof Mellberg, at least until the return to fitness of Liam Ridgewell. The 20-year-old has also been sidelined with knee problems and is expected to return to fitness at around the same time as his Danish team-mate.
