Lucien Favre Admits His Side Gave Club Brugge Too Much Time to Defend in Disappointing 0-0 Draw

​Lucien Favre has conceded that although he was pleased that his side progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League, they could have performed better against Club Brugge.

Dortmund dominated the entire match against Brugge on Wednesday evening, but their possession ultimately counted for nothing, as they created few clear cut chances and ended up drawing 0-0. 

Though the result was enough to seal qualification for the Bundesliga club, it did mean that Atletico were handed the edge in the race to finish at the top of Group A, with just one matchday left to play.

Speaking to reporters as quoted by Borussia Dortmund's official website, Favre underlined that his side had achieved what they'd set out to do by qualifying, but also pointed out where he felt his side could've improved on the night.

"We really wanted to win, but we are qualified for the round of 16 - that was our goal. Brugge defended very well and very deeply.

"The passes were sometimes too slow to destabilise the opponent. We could not accelerate the game with the ball on the foot or with passes. They had too much time to defend. We should have moved faster."

Favre's Dortmund side now face a trip to Monaco with an outside chance of topping Group A, as they trail Atletico Madrid by two points with just one game remaining. 

Following their disappointing draw against Brugge, the likelihood is that Dortmund will face one of Europe's elite in the next round. If they want to get through that challenge they'll need to show more dynamism when attacking than they managed against the Belgians on Wednesday.
