Paris Saint-Germain claimed the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday evening.
The showpiece fixture provided Unai Emery squad with a stern European test ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Villa started the contest on the front foot, taking the lead midway through the first half when new signing Johan Manzambi powered home a header from a well-delivered corner kick.
PSG responded forcefully in the second half, scoring twice across a ten-minute spell through Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele to turn the match around.
However, Villa demonstrated great resilience, equalising through Ollie Watkins to force a penalty shootout.
PSG held their nerve from 12 yards, converting four spot kicks to lift the trophy.
Emery praised the physical endurance shown by his players as Villa now prepare for their final pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.
