Aston Villa Player of the Season- Christian Benteke

Last updated : 06 May 2013 By DSG

Such is the hype surrounding the young Belgian Christian Benteke right now that if you asked any man in the street who Villa?s star performer has been, they would say his name. Even if they hated football. To many, he looks to have single-handedly kept the Villains in the Premier League ? if they do indeed survive ? but that would be harsh to a couple of other Villa players; namely Ron Vlaar and Andi Weimann.

Let?s start with the big man up top. The powerful Belgian has scored an incredible 22 goals in all competitions this term ? including a recent hat-trick at home to the Black Cats ? and has shaped Villa?s style of play. He is a natural target man but, as shown by the above statistic, his finishing is also extremely accomplished and there is no doubt that he will have his fair share of suitors come the summer transfer window.

Big Dutch centre-back Ron Vlaar has been a revelation since joining the Birmingham-based club from Feyenoord in August. He has been a commanding and towering presence in the heart of defence and was swiftly named club captain in September after having only made a handful of appearances. Although not Villa-related, his personal highlight will have been deservedly becoming a permanent fixture in his national team.

Finally, Austrian creative midfielder Andi Weimann has had a solid breakthrough season at Aston Villa. His pace and trickery has been evident and he has linked up with the big man Benteke effectively on numerous occasions. Still only a young man, the midfielder-cum-attacker has an extremely promising future ahead of him and will be looking to build on this campaign next year.

Despite Villa?s survival battle, they have had some particular highlights from the season; their Capital One Cup run (to the Semi-Finals), and the performances of Benteke, Vlaar and Weimann will be the most memorable moments.
