Aston Villa target Wolves Matt Jarvis

Gerard Houllier is planning to battle his former club Liverpool for in-demand Wolves winger Matt Jarvis.

The Aston Villa boss has earmarked the England new boy as a ready -made replacement for Ashley Young who looks set to leave in the summer.

Manchester United and Liverpool head the list of clubs interested in the Villa player who has also impressed on England duty.

Jarvis made his first England appearance in the friendly with Ghana and is also a target for Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy will demand at least ?8m for the 24-year-old, who cost just ?400,000 from Gillingham in 2007.

McCarthy said: 'At this moment in time there's no reason why we would want to sell anybody, and there's no necessity.

'But me being honest, I am saying there are certain things that happen in the game - you can't stop it.'
