MATCH PREVIEW

Twelve months ago Aston Villa were gearing up for a Wembley date in the Carling Cup, having seen off Blackburn at the semi-final stage. This season Villa spend the League Cup final weekend desperate for three Premier League points to edge them up the table, while casting admiring glances towards Wembley as second-city rivals Birmingham line up for their own shot at glory.

I think it will be a vital game for us, the fans need to know that... We need everybody backing us because we haven't played for a fortnight

Gerard Houllier, Aston Villa manager

Villa have suffered only one defeat in their last six games - which equates to their best run of form since Gerard Houllier took charge last September. That said, the Midlands club are winless in three matches and kick-off just three points above the relegation zone, although victory would lift them above their opponents, who start the day in 11th.

Football has faded into insignificance for Blackburn defender and New Zealand captain Ryan Nelsen this week. The Kiwi legend plans to take to the Villa Park pitch sporting a black armband as a mark of respect for the many people killed or injured in the earthquake that has devastated his hometown of Christchurch.

The 33-year-old spent the early hours of Tuesday morning frantically trying to establish contact with his family, before eventually receiving news that all his close loved ones had emerged unscathed. His sister gave birth to a boy after going into early labour just 30 minutes after the quake struck.
