The 32-year-old midfielder has been sidelined since October, having played only nine times for Villa since joining from Portsmouth in the summer, and will now travel to Colorado to be examined by knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman. Dr Steadman had previously operated on Ronaldo, Alan Shearer, Ruud van Nistelrooy and, erm, Bournemouth’s Jason Tindall. "Patrik is still having problems with his knee and I don't know when he will be back," said managed David O’Leary. "It's nothing extraordinary. We'll just have to wait and see what happens."

Berger added: "The right knee isn't very good. I'm going to
America to see Dr Steadman. If he decides to do anything, it will probably happen on Wednesday. I just don't know what's wrong, but at least this way I'll know how long things are going to take to get me right. I want to play football again and need to get it sorted."
