Carla Ward confirms Aston Villa are targeting new strikers

Carla Ward has confirmed that Aston Villa are already in the process of looking to sign at least two strikers in the summer transfer window.

Ward has enjoyed a solid first season in charge at Villa, with her side sitting a comfortable 12 points clear of the drop zone in ninth.

However, the Villans have been particularly goal shy this season. Villa are the WSL's joint-lowest scorers, finding the net just 11 times in 16 matches.

"Already on it," Ward replied when asked if the club were looking to recruit a striker this summer. "We were on it about eight months ago, we just can't get one, they're pricey.

"I can say the wheels are already in motion. We don't just want one, we want two or three. They're hard to come by of course but we've absolutely started work on that. We have to get some bodies in the building in the summer that's for sure."

Ward joined Villa from second city rivals Birmingham in the summer of 2021 and signed ten new players during her first transfer window in charge, before making three new additions in January.

Three of those summer signings currently top Villa's goalscoring charts. Midfielder Remi Allen is Villa's top scorer in the WSL this season with three goals, while forwards Emily Gienick and Alisha Lehmann both have two.

A lack of goals has been Villa's downfall in recent weeks after drawing successive blanks in defeats to Brighton and Everton, despite seeing more of the ball and registering more shots.

Ward's side are next in action on Sunday, as they face WSL champions Chelsea.
