Delaney targets derby date

The Welsh defender, who has missed the last four matches with knee ligament damage, had hoped to return to action with a second-string appearance at the Bescot Stadium. But he was forced to revise his target today. “I’ve got no chance of making tomorrow’s game,” he admitted. “It has probably come three or four days too soon for me. I’m looking at joining in training towards the end of the week, then I’m looking at the Birmingham game.”

The derby is on 20 March as Villa seek their first win against their city rivals for 17 years in the league. Delaney is no shoe-in for an automatic spot, however, as although Liam Ridgewell has tailed off a little in recent weeks, Martin Laursen is also on course for a return to the starting lineup.
