Duo set for day of destiny

The pair are currently first and second favourites to be the next Premiership manager to receive the chop after tumbling out of the League Cup this week. The Barcodes lost to an under-strength Wigan side, while Villa were humiliated by Doncaster and with both teams languishing in the lower reaches of the Premiership, their jobs look in the balance. Tubbs will have heard the ominous words of "humiliated and embarrassed" from chairman Doug Ellis in the wake of Tuesday’s defeat, and should that progress to ‘he has’ and ‘my confidence’ then he is surely a goner.

A win in Newcastle, would of course ease some of that pressure, and he will welcome back Wilfred Bouma and Kevin Phillips as he aims to do so. James Milner will not be available, however, as he cannot play against his parent club, and Lee Hendrie may make his first start of the season. Newcastle’s list of absentees is far more imposing, with record signing Michael Owen (groin), Emre (hamstring) and Kieron Dyer (illness) all ruled out, while Celestine Babayaro is suspended.
