Friedel's agent, Tony Gill, confirmed he has held positive talks with Villa's chief executive, Paul Faulkner, over a fresh deal for the American, whose current deal runs out this summer.
Friedel's agent Tony Gill said: "We are in talks over a new contract. Brad is very happy at Villa. If Brad was not happy, he would not be talking over a new contract. I have spoken with (Villa) chief executive Paul Faulkner and talks are going very well indeed."
Friedel is already officially Villa's oldest player, beating the previous record in February of 39 years and 257 days held by Ernie Callaghan in the 1940s.
He also holds the Premier League record for the most successive appearances and the sequence is already over the 250-game mark.
Villa's other senior goalkeeper, Andy Marshall, 35, recently signed a new 12-month contract and admits he has taken inspiration from Friedel.
Marshall said: "I was thinking my career was nearly finished but I came here two years ago and saw how Brad was at 38-39, and now nearly 40, and I realised that the guy is phenomenal.
"It's testament to how he lives his life, how he trains and how he plays football.
"You look at the guy and you think 'I can't ever see him stopping.'
"It's made me think that I can go on for another two, three, four years."
