Hamstring hits Agbonlahor

Prior to England Under 21's aggregate victory over Wales on Tuesday, Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor was told that he would be on a chartered plane to Belarus to join the full England squad after the game.

Unfortunately, it seems as if Agbonlahor's England injury jinx has struck again as he was withdrawn at half time with a hamstring problem during the game at Villa Park.

The pacy young frontman was named as part of Fabio Capello's first England squad for the game against Switzerland in February only to see his opportunity disappear due to a hamstring strain.

Villa fans will be hoping it was just a precautionary measure with a big clash against Portsmouth on the agenda this Saturday at Villa Park.

Hopefully that game will be as lively as the U21 clash at the same venue, which saw four goals, a sending off, chances aplenty and a sensational strike.

It all made for a very entertaining evening as England's Under 21's qualified for next summer's European Championships.

Stuart Pearce's men managed to claim a hard fought 2-2 draw on the night against their Welsh counterparts, which meant they progressed 5-4 on aggregate.

Virtuoso

An impressive Wales side troubled England more than many would have expected.

They were led by Arsenal's inspirational 17 year old Aaron Ramsey who turned in a virtuoso performance. The creative midfielder scored a goal of such quality that many of the 23,812 strong Villa Park crowd will have left talking as much about him as the game itself.

Tottenham lynchpin Tom Huddlestone, who was later harshly sent off, set the ball rolling direct from a free kick in front of the Holte End on 13 minutes and a flurry of first half goals followed.

Ramsey restored parity on the 24 minute mark as he let fly on the half volley with his allegedly weaker left foot. The strike from all of 30 yards found the top right corner of Joe Hart's goal.

Ramsey then turned provider as his excellent through ball allowed Reading striker Simon Church to calmly lift his shot over the advancing Hart four minutes later.

Church's strike levelled the tie at 4-4 on aggregate and put Wales in the ascendancy.

But in the 35th minute, England skipper Stephen Taylor headed back across goal from a Jamie O'Hara centre and his header struck the arm of Sam Vokes with the ball ending up in the visitors net.

Astonishing

Villa winger James Milner played the full 90 minutes and was one of England's better performers on the night, mixing his attacking instincts with his defensive responsibilities very well.

Indeed he operated as almost an auxiliary full back for much of the second half due to the dismissal of Huddlestone.

Villa's record signing also showed the experience that has come with his astonishing 40 U21 caps taking the ball into the corner late on to run down the clock and booting it to safety when the need arose.

Craig Gardner was again unfortunate to miss out with injury and he will now concentrate on getting himself fit enough to play for Villa.

Wales nearly took the tie to extra time as Vokes hit the post but Bryan Flynn's men simply couldn't get the desired goal.
