Hope For Harewood

After securing a fantastic last gasp away win at Goodison Park, Villa should be on a high going into this weekend's clash with Gary Megson's Bolton.

However, recent home form hasn't been good for the Claret and Blue and they will have to be careful against a side who will undoubtedly deny them space and long spells of possession.

Villa know they are more than capable of beating Wanderers but the home faithful also know that with one up front, options are limited.

Martin O'Neill is unlikely to change a winning side but if he has aspirations of breaching the big four, he must be prepared to mix things up a bit.

On the road, Villa are an undoubted success. They play with pace and vigour. Their class at times exudes effortlessly from every player.

The game at Everton was not an example of that but their strong spirit saw the Villans through, literally to the final whistle.

Ashley Young's brilliant brace showed that Villa can finish when given the opportunity. The only problem is that at home they don't get given chances to create.

O'Neill must find a way to break the monotony of low scoring draws at Villa Park, one way is surely to introduce Marlon Harewood.

Fair enough, the former Nottingham Forest and West Ham man may not be the most prolific striker in the Premier League but he adds an extra dimension to the side.

Gasping

Without John Carew, Villa are lacking a focal point going forward. Gabby Agbonlahor tries his best but he needs a partner alongside him.

The young England striker would rather be out on the flanks and bursting into the box rather than being asked to hold the ball up in the centre.

That lack of centrality was illustrated on Merseyside as Young took up the lone striker role and worked it with destructive consequences. He was sensational in the second half but the same position would be no good for the pacey winger at home.

Harewood showed against MSK Zilina that he is capable of retaining the ball and bringing others into the game.

Nathan Delfouneso is one man that would make a case for Harewood's inclusion as it was the experienced frontman who set up the 17 year old for a debut goal.

No-one is denying that Villa have got it spot on away from home. At times they are breathtaking and if the last minute victory at Everton didn't leave you gasping for air then you're not a real fan.

But, at home other options must be explored. Harewood is the most likely source of improvement until January when Villa are expected to strengthen.
Possible targets include Roque Santa Cruz and Emile Heskey. The latter is adored by England boss Fabio Capello because he brings others into the game.

Heskey may not have the greatest scoring record but he ensures that others register and Harewood could do exactly the same.

Marlon just needs a chance, but Bolton probably shouldn't beware as it looks unlikely that he will be given the opportunity to show what he is made of this weekend.
