John Gregory will continue his colourful coaching career in the unlikely surroundings of Kazakhstan.

The former Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers manager has signed a two-year contract with FC Kairat, who play in the country's biggest city Almaty.

Gregory, 57, had spent the last two years working in Israel before leaving FC Ashdod in April.

He is believed to be the first Briton to manage a football club in Kazakhstan and met his new players for the first time on Monday.

Kairat are 10th of 12 teams in the country's Premier League and Gregory told his new side: 'I can't change the past, but I can affect future results.

'First of all I want the players to forget about all the failures of the past and think only about the future.

'Sometimes it is not even particularly important how a team plays - most important is that they win. I love to win and I like players with winning characters.'

High times: The former Aston Villa boss also managed at QPR and Derby County

Gregory, who has also managed Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle, Wycombe Wanderers and Derby County, was officially due to be unveiled in his new role on Tuesday.

Kairat were once the regional powerhouse during Soviet times but have won the Kazakh league just twice since independence - most recently in 2004.

The club hit the headlines last month when their player Armand Masimzhanov was banned for life for launching an astonishing kung-fu kick at an unwitting opponent.
