Lerner Optimistic About Barry Deal

Villa supremo Randy Lerner is set to do all in his power to persuade skipper Gareth Barry to snub a big money move and stay at Villa Park.

With Liverpool, Tottenham and Man City all rumoured to be chasing the England midfielder, American owner Lerner faces a tough battle but it is one which he is confident he can win.

Barry will be offered a deal worth in the region of £75,000 per week, making him the highest earner at the club by quite some distance.

With Martin Laursen now retired, Barry will also be handed the full-time captaincy, which he lost at the start of last season due to uncertainty about his future.

And with the World Cup in South Africa at the end of next season, England's lynch-pin may just be tempted to stay at a club where he is guaranteed first team football.

Should Lerner fulfil his number one summer aim and keep Barry, it is likely that the team will continue to be built around the 28 year old.

Fellow midfielder Stiliyan Petrov recently committed his his future to the club and all at Villa will hope that he is not the only man to sign a new deal this summer.
