The 40,000 claret-and-blue scarves will each carry the club's as yet unveiled crest and will be emblazoned with the inscription: "Proud History, Bright Future." The former is in part reference to the 25th anniversary of the historic win over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam in the 1982 European Cup final, and the match against the Blades will form part of a weekend of events designed to mark it.

The new crest which has been designed following a survey of 4,500 respondents drawn from staff, supporter groups and sponsors and will include a to commemorate the European Cup win, and will get around Premiership red tape which does not allow a star outside a club crest. Lerner's purchase of the scarves is just the latest in a number of goodwill gestures by the American, who paid for 4,500 supporters to be taken by bus to the Carling Cup game at Chelsea - which Villa comprehensively lost. Let's home lightning does not strike twice.
