McCann makes steady progress

McCann played 90 minutes in the 2-1 defeat by Wolves on Saturday and although he showed glimpses of form, he is not yet at match fitness following a lengthy lay-off last term. His return has demonstrated enough to convince Tubbs to hand the former England international a new three-year extension but, like Villa fans monitoring our summer player intake, he hopes there is more to come.

“It’s great to have him back but like the others he needs to do better,” the understated Tubbs told the club’s official site. “His knee was still a little stiff after his operation, but he came through the game well. The main thing was not to take him off. The easiest thing to do would have been to put a couple of players on but that’s not getting their fitness up.”
