Mellberg ready for new deal

The 29-year-old Sweden international has 20 months to run on his contract but is delighted with the club's progress this season. "I would like to stay at Aston Villa if they offer me a new contract but I've not heard anything yet," Mellberg said. "I am not looking to leave. It has been a good start to the season. I feel good personally and my form has been good too. There is no reason to say no."

Mellberg was believed to be considering his future towards the end of David O'Leary's reign at the helm but O'Neill's arrival has sparked a change of heart. O'Neill stripped Mellberg of the captaincy, instead handing the armband to Gareth Barry, but the former Celtic and Leicester boss wants to keep Mellberg at Villa Park.
