The Villa midfielder was dismised 20 minutes from the end of the 1-1 draw at St. James' Park for a second bookable offence and though O'Leary admitted the second offence warranted a yellow card it was the first booking that McCann received that so upset the Villa boss.

"I'm disappointed with the sending off because I thought the referee got that totally wrong," he said.

"I thought he should have booked him for the challenge he did send him off for, but I thought he booked the wrong player for the first yellow card, got it totally wrong.

"I had a good view of it. It was about five yards away and he's gone into the fracas and he's picked the wrong player out."
