Ridgewell ruled out

The Villa centre-back linked up with the rest of the squad in Yorkshire, but was sent back to the club after medical staff assessed his knee. Ridgewell was none the less keen to allay fears that he could become the latest addition to a lengthy injury list, insisting “I’ll be fit for the Blues”.

Staff at Bodymoor Heath echoed the 21-year-old’s assessment: “Liam reported back for rest and treatment. He was checked over by the England medical staff and they clearly felt that because he has this niggle, he’s not right to play. But there’s no suggestion that he’s a doubt for Birmingham.”

Aaron Hughes, Mark Delaney, Kevin Phillips and Milan Baroš should also be fit, but it seems an inopportune moment for
Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell to enquire about taking Gary Cahill on loan.
