Right back role could be a real problem

The sale of Gary Cahill may have looked good business at the time but did we really need to sell him? We are now faced with a dilemma for Saturday's match against Sunderland as Olof Mellberg is suspended, Curtis Davies is out with a long term injury and Craig Gardner may not recover in time.
The fact that we sold Cahill without even replacing him is hardly surprising given our recent record in the transfer market, but it could really come back to bite us this time.
We clearly needed a right back at the start of the season as we didn't have one at the club. However, we failed to sign anyone in the problem position instead choosing to play Mellberg in a somewhat unaccustomed role.
Craig Gardner who is naturally a midfielder has also filled in and although both have been more than commendable we had the opportunity of making a signing in January. We failed to take it, and to add insult to injury we sold Cahill who is undoubtedly a promising defender.
Was it really worth a quick £5 million? Did we need the money that badly?
The answer to both is a resounding NO!
We are now faced with having to use another midfielder at right back on Saturday. Don't be surprised if Moustapha Salifou is asked to fill the role after a neat substitute appearance at Portsmouth, but if he is to make his full debut he would probably choose to play in a role he is more suited to.
