RIP Paul Birch

Last updated : 02 February 2009 By Tom Vickers
Paul Birch, the former Villa midfielder, will be sadly missed by all fans of the Claret and Blue.

The diminutive star, who passed away aged 46 on Monday morning at Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield, played for Villa between 1980 and 1991.

The legendary midfielder managed two honours during his time at Villa, winning the F.A. Youth Cup and, significantly, the European Super Cup in 1982.

Birch was awarded a testimonial against Wolves in 1991, who he moved to during that year.

The West Bromwich born footballer more than earned the match after making over 200 appearances for the Villans.

He left the club after finding himself out of the first team picture when Jozef Venglos took over the reins.

Birch played for Wolves on 142 occasions, scoring 14 goals, before spells at Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City and finally Halesowen Town. He also had a loan spell at Preston North End whilst with Wanderers.

Birch will forever be remembered but never forgotten and our sincerest condolences go to his family.

From all Villa fans RIP Birchy.
