The constant Gardner

Zat Knight may be the obvious choice to take over from crocked Curtis Davies but there is another player who could be in the frame. With Olof Mellberg preferring the centre back role rather than the right back berth he has been forced into this season, Craig Gardner could have an important impact in the race for Europe.
Gardner who is a current England Under 21 international could be just the man to step in for Davies. He has proven to be a valuable utility player so far this season but would relish a regular starting role. He is more attacking minded than Knight, due to the fact that he has been brought up to play in midfield. However, his defensive grit has never been in doubt and he has often filled in for Mellberg at right back.
Gardner has also scored some useful goals, notably against Arsenal and Spurs. He is somewhat of a free kick specialist with his powerful low drives often causing problems for opposing keepers. His touch is excellent and he is very rarely caught on the ball.
The decision is there for Martin O'Neill to make but if he is looking for a more attacking approach then Gardner is the man. The player brought through the Villa ranks deserves his chance as much as anyone else at the club and he appears to have all the necessary determination needed to succeed. Good luck to the ever constant Gardner!
