In a letter written to the California supporters' club, Hanks said: 'If luck stays with me, I will catch a match this season.'

The Castaway actor has often talked of his love for the Premier League outfit despite his failure to take in a live game.

But if he manages to get down to Villa Park this term, Hanks should probably brush up on his somewhat sketchy knowledge of the Midlands club.

Earlier this year. Hanks referred to Villa as 'the scarlet and blues', before urging fellow American Randy Lerner to turn to Nigel Clough following Gerard Houllier's departure from the club.

He then revealed: 'I fell in love with Aston Villa because I thought the name sounded like an island off Sardinia.

'A lovely place to go. 'I am going to go on holiday to Aston Villa. We'll take the kids, play on the beach, get a lovely cabana overlooking the football field.'

With that in mind, Villa supporters might be hoping the actor is short of luck this season.
