Villa need experience - Marshall

The first-team coach is in temporary charge after the sacking of Paul Lambert on Wednesday.

Marshall, who is set to take the team in the FA Cup against Leicester on Sunday, all but ruled himself out of the race to be the next boss at Villa Park.

And he insisted Villa needed an experienced head with the club third from bottom in the Barclays Premier League.

"This is a big club and it's not somewhere for someone to cut their teeth," he said.

"It's certainly a big club and I would say there's not many things which are going to prepare you for this experience so I think a manager with experience is probably necessary but it's not really my decision or my call."

Lambert was sacked after just two wins in 21 league games which left Villa in the relegation zone.

Marshall worked with Lambert at previous club Norwich before he followed him to Villa and the former Arsenal defender revealed his disappointment for his friend.

He said: "Absolutely, he's been really good for me

He brought me in at Norwich and gave me an opportunity there, and brought me here and gave me a great opportunity to work at a great club

I'm hugely disappointed that it's not going to continue.

"I've spoken to him and he's obviously disappointed."
