Villas Andreas Weimann contract talks breakdown
Updated Tuesday, 26th February 2013
Aston Villa's hopes of persuading striker Andreas Weimann to sign a new contract appear to have stalled after initial talks, sources understands.
Weimann has been one of Villa's key performers in his first full season of first-team football and scored his 10th goal of the campaign in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal. He signed a three-year deal at the start of the 2011-2012 season believed to be worth in the region of £15,000 a week.
Villa are now hoping for the 21-year-old to commit his long-term future with the midlands club and he has no desire to leave. But it is believed that the new terms on offer have initially not been looked upon favourably by Weimann's representatives.
Villa's precarious position in the Barclays Premier League - they lie third from bottom with 11 games left - is also thought to be a consideration.
Manager Paul Lambert has confirmed that talks were ongoing with the Austria Under-21 international who joined Villa from Rapid Vienna five years ago.
Lambert has described Weimann as "a natural finisher" and he has slotted in effectively alongside 15-goal Christian Benteke - often at the expense of club-record signing Darren Bent.
The Scot recently said: "It would be great for the long term if Andreas signs (a new contract). The talks have been ongoing."
Weimann's immediate priority is to try and ensure top-flight survival for Villa after the setback against the Gunners.
He said: "We will fight for each other, for the fans and for the club and do everything we can to stay up.
"We have 11 games to go and we will do everything to get out of this. We're confident of turning it around. We've got 11 games to get out of it. We're confident that by the end of the season we won't be in there."
