"We spoke to his agent and he cited personal reasons for Alan's departure," Rangers boss Alex McLeish said.
"I didn't want to pry too much so I just left things as they were. It's highly unlikely the player will return to Germany to meet up with us and we'll need to see what happens.
"I don't know if we'll bring him back and, at the moment, the whole thing is put aside. We will just need to watch this space.
"We'll talk when we get back because that side of things is still open but we'll need to see what happens."
