Wigan Defender Wanted

Villa are set to test Wigan manager Steve Bruce's resistance with a £4m bid for his Austrian international defender Paul Scharner.

The strong centre-back, who can also be employed in a midfield role, has one year left on his contract at the JJB and Bruce has admitted that he faces a fight to keep one of his most prized assets.

Villa would be able to sign Scharner for around half of his asking price as Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan will be reluctant to let him leave for nothing at the end of next season.

The 29 year-old impressed Claret and Blue boss Martin O'Neill with a superb display at Villa Park on January 31 as Wigan claimed a goalless draw.

Scharner frustrated the Villa attack with some outstanding blocks, including an amazing goal line save, and such bravery could mean he is the ideal replacement for retired skipper and warrior Martin Laursen.
