Zat Faces Fight To Live Up To Laursen

Zat Knight claims he is good enough to fill the big void left by Martin Laursen but, with Villa's Premier League rivals eyeing a move for the defender, he may not get the chance to prove his worth.

Bolton manager Gary Megson is known to be a keen admirer of his talents as is Wolves supremo Mick McCarthy.

But former Fulham centre-back Knight is a life-long Villa fan and he will strongly resist any offer as long as he knows his boss Martin O'Neill wants him to stay at the club.

However, it is not yet clear whether the Northern Irishman wants to retain Knight as he looks to rebuild his squad this summer.

Curtis Davies seems set to fill one of the central defensive berths at the beginning of the new campaign, despite some poor performances at the back end of last season.

Knight may not be given the same reprieve and although he would be very disappointed to leave Villa Park, he may not be given much choice in the matter if he is told that there is no longer a place for him in the side.
