Barry defends friendlies

The Villa skipper ended a three-and-a-half year exile from the international stage when he played against Spain at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, and said: "In friendlies, fringe players get a chance to impress. For myself and a lot of other players in my situation, these matches are an opportunity to get a game." His comments come in the aftermath of renewed condemnation of meaningless matches following a limp 1-0 defeat by Spain. Sadly for Barry, the critical voice most audible was that of England assistant manager Terry Venables, so the in-form left-sided player may have to wait another three-and-a-half years, before he can play under a sixth England boss.
