Baroš failed to fully recover from a slight knock, so only lined up on the bench as the Czech Republic claimed a 3-0 win in Iceland which confirmed them as runners-up in Group 1. The result also meant that Sweden only needed to avoid a double-figured defeat to pick up one of the best runners-up spots, and went one better as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson and Kim Källström were all on target as the Swedes claimed second in Group 8.

Denmark were also victors in Kazakhstan, although Turkey’s win elsewhere meant it came in vain and Sørenson, who conceded late on, will not line up in Germany. Nor will Angel, who helped Colombia to a 1-0 win in Paraguay but it proved insufficient after Uruguay beat Argentina. Elsewhere, Steven Davis missed a gilt-edged chance as Northern Ireland lost 2-0 in Austria and Ulises de la Cruz was rested.
