The 'Hammer' knocks on Germany's door

The 'Hammer' (presumably so named because of his love of DIY) has been a regular for the Under-21 side for the past few years and, despite seeing him in action this season, Jürgen Klinsmann has promoted the 22-year-old to the senior squad.

The midfielder has played a part in every game for David O'Leary's side this season, though he was dropped to the bench against Crystal Palace on Saturday after failing to recreate the dogged form that typified his displays last season.

Hitzlsperger joins Villa's South American contingent in receiving an international call-up this week. Juan Pablo Angel has been recalled to the Colombian squad, while Ulises de la Cruz will be joining Ecuador. Nolberto Solano, meanwhile, will be linking up with his Peruvian colleagues although this could soon become a thing of the past after 29-year-old hinted he would retire from international duty if his side had no chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
