Villa stars shine brightly

Sweden (Olof Mellberg)

Mellberg scored his third international goal with a well-taken volley as Sweden eased to a 5-0 victory against Iceland to put themselves in a strong position to reach the finals next year. The centre-back struck on the stroke of half-time, powering Niclas Alexandersson's cross in off the post to make it 3-0 following earlier goals from Anders Svensson and former Villain Marcus Allback. Markus Rosenberg made it four before Allback sealed the win in bizarre fashion, blasting home after everyone else had stopped for a penalty.

Norway (John Carew)

Norway recorded a second 4-0 home win in five days as two goals from Carew helped defeat Hungary and keep Age Hareide's side in touch with the leaders in Group C. Steffen Iversen and substitute Daniel Braaten left the home team two goals to the good in Oslo before Carew came in to his own in the last half-hour, registering twice to complete an emphatic success.

Scotland
(Shaun Maloney)

Scotland revived their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 as Maloney scored his first international goal to set up a 2-0 victory in the Faroe Islands. Only in the team because of injuries to first-choice players, the 24-year-old Maloney broke the deadlock just after the half-hour with a perfectly executed free-kick on his second international appearance, and Garry O'Connor clinched the points four minutes later.

Denmark
(Thomas Sorensen & Martin Laursen)

Sorensen and Laursen each played 90 minutes as Denmark put the dramas of Saturday behind them with a 2-0 victory against Latvia in Group F. Former Charlton winger Dennis Rommedahl scored both goals before half-time.

Bulgaria (Stilian Petrov)

Petrov played as Bulgaria came from a goal down to extend their unbeaten start to Euro 2008 qualifying to seven games with a 2-1 victory against Belarus in Sofia.

Elsewhere, former Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger scored the winner as Germany beat Slovakia 2-1 in Hamburg.
