Attack vs defense at the Lane

Last updated : 14 September 2008 By Tom Vickers
This season's clash at White Hart Lane takes on a fascinating new look as Tottenham's brand new strike-force look to overpower Villa's refreshed backline.
Martin O'Neill has brought in no fewer than six reinforcements in the goalkeeping and defensive department during the summer and they are just starting to gel.
For fans of the North London side, Monday night's encounter will give them the chance to see new striker Roman Pavlyuchenko and possibly Manchester United loanee Frazier Campbell.
Villa's Brad Friedel and co will also face the immense attacking prowess of Luka Modric and summer target David Bentley.
O'Neill was eventually outbid for the Blackburn winger as Ramos secured the signature.
Since then, Villa have themselves brought in a fiery young English winger in the shape of James Milner.
Both sides have altered personnel hugely and it must be said that Villa look to have come out of the transfer window in stronger shape.
After keeping influential midfield man Gareth Barry and adding players such as Nicky Shorey and Luke Young in problem positions there is a renewed force about the men from the Midlands.

Assault

Spurs, on the other hand, have been unable to keep hold of their star strike partnership of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.
And it is clear that the new men at the Lane are still feeling their way into their unusual surrounding.
Both sides are in the process of adapting, but with plenty of European action under their belts Villa should be ready to exercise the demons of last season's draw in the capital.
Holding a 4-1 lead going into the last half an hour, Villa collapsed and conceded a last minute goal by Younis Kaboul.
The point ultimately saved Martin Jol's job.
Jol has since left and Ramos' style appears to be even more kamikaze than that of his predecessor.
And with such attacking talent on both sides, the score could even reach double figures this time around.
Villa will be relying on their new look defence, which must stand firm in the face of an inevitable barrage.
But let's not forget the attacking assault that the away side launched last season and all of their goalscorers are still at the club, meaning Villa are as potent as ever on the counter attack.
It should be a white hot cracker at the Lane once again.
