Forget Hatton Vs Mayweather - Its Villa Vs Portsmouth

Last updated : 07 December 2007 By Tom Vickers
The biggest fight this weekend is not Ricky Hatton versus Floyd Mayweather or even Amir Khan versus Graham Earle. It's Villa against Portsmouth.
The clash takes place at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon with both teams looking to knock each other out of the race for Europe.
It's a meeting between two of the Premiership form teams with Villa looking to build on an impressive record of four wins in five and Portsmouth aiming to maintain their four match unbeaten run.
The home side will fancy their chances after a dominant second half performance against table-toppers Arsenal last weekend. Although they eventually lost the game Martin O'Neill's men will be confident they can turn over their nearest challengers for sixth spot.
Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth have been brilliant on the road so far this season, landing notable victories at Newcastle and most recently at Villa's fierce rivals Birmingham City.
The Fratton Park side have a strong team including one of the top scorers in the league, Benjani who has eight goals. His battle with Martin Laursen is likely to be vital, as is the fight between Gabby Agbonlahor and Sol Campbell at the other end.
There are plenty of interesting one on ones involved in the game including the renewal of conflict between Villa keeper Scott Carson and Pompey midfielder Niko Kranjcar. The England man let a Kranjcar shot slip through his grasp at Wembley which contributed to the nation's failure to qualify for Euro 2008. He will be looking to overcome his personal nightmare and keep out the Croat on Saturday.
Villa will welcome back Nigel Reo-Coker for the game after suspension and he will provide a straight swap for injured Bulgarian Stiliyan Petrov. Petrov is the only injury problem for Martin O'Neill who looks to keep a settled line-up.
Harry Redknapp will be without defenders Lauren, Crainie and Primus for the trip to the Midlands and Sean Davis is also likely to be missing. That means former Villa target Pedro Mendes will continue in a defensive midfield role.
Consistency could be the key for O'Neill who looks to overcome another of the Premiership's top managers. Both he and Redknapp were rumoured to be in contention for the England job but their focus will be fixed on the fight for a European place tomorrow.
Let battle commence!

Editor's Prediction: It will be a tough game for the Villa but Young and Agbonlahor have been brilliant of late and we may just have enough speed and skill to overcome Pompey. A close 2-1 in prospect I think.

Come on Villa!
