Sacrificial Shootout

It's the battle of the sacrificial managers at Villa Park as Martin O'Neill takes on Harry Redknapp in a priority league clash.

Both bosses will be hoping for a crucial league win, a win that will help vindicate their decision to rest key first teamers in the Uefa Cup round of 32.

Villa lost in Moscow in their second leg with eight key men left at home, whilst Spurs sent out the kids for their tie against Shakhtar.

Ironically, the sides would have met had they both progressed. Obviously neither fancied an all English encounter.

The Claret and Blue have since regretted their decision to throw away a place in the competition.

O'Neill and his men failed to win against Stoke in the aftermath of the Moscow meltdown and then suffered a crushing defeat at Eastlands against Manchester City.

Fans were forced to endure chants of "Istanbul" from the City faithful and who could blame the Villans following for being a little disheartened as they were told their team would be fresher for not travelling abroad.

Target

Redknapp has already vindicated his decision to leave out Spurs' top players for the clash against the Ukrainians.

The men from White Hart Lane have yet to lose since their exit from Europe, putting in an impressive performance against Manchester United in the Carling Cup final and claiming a fine 4-0 win against Middlesbrough in the process.

The man in form for Spurs is one time Villa target Robbie Keane.

The Irish striker, who rejoined the North London side from Liverpool in January, scored in the game against Boro and set up two other goals. Keane also netted last time out to claim a cool point for his side at Sunderland.

The form of the ex Inter Milan striker is in complete contrast to that of Villa man Gabby Agbonlahor, who can't seem to buy a goal right now.

The young English speedster has found the net just once in his last 11 league games and in that time he has missed sitters against Everton, Stoke and Manchester City.

Agbonlahor still sits joint fifth in the Premier League top goalscorers chart but he really needs to net soon to help his own confidence and that of his teammates.

Pack

Villa are now on a run of six league games without a win and they lost fourth spot on Saturday as Arsenal thrashed Blackburn 4-0.

The Gunners are bang on form at the moment and unless Villa claim maximum points against Spurs, a Champions League place looks unlikely.

With Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton to come in the next three games, the Claret and Blue really need a morale boosting victory.

O'Neill may choose to shuffle his small pack for the game with John Carew likely to start and Carlos Cuellar vying for a place at centre back in place of the out of form Curtis Davies.

It's all or nothing for Villa now and should they claim a win, you can guarantee that one man will be more relieved than most.

Make no mistake O'Neill needs the victory. He needs it to show that he did right in sacrificing the club's last hope of silverware this season. He needs it to show that a training trip to Dubai was worthwhile. And, more than anything, he needs it to prove to himself and his players that they are capable of coping with the pressure of finishing fourth.
