Safe Hands Sorensen

Former Villa number one Thomas Sorensen goes back to his former stomping ground on Sunday as Stoke City look to make it double trouble for the Claret and Blue.

The Danish keeper and his new teammates managed to win a thrilling encounter at the Britannia Stadium early in the season and Tony Pulis will be hoping for more of the same from his side.

But, they will face a Villa team desperate to return to winning ways after being knocked out of two cup competitions in the space of as many weeks.

And they should get the victory they desire against City, who are without an away win in 13 league attempts.

Despite lying in a lowly 18th place in the table the Potters have actually won more points at home than their hosts but on their travels they are a complete contrast to the men in Claret and Blue.

Martin O'Neill's fully rested side will be looking to exploit Stoke's lack of confidence on the road. Villa would go eight points clear of Arsenal in fifth with a victory and with some tricky fixtures coming up a win is a must.

Eight first team players return after being left out of the trip to Moscow in midweek, with only Curtis Davies, Zat Knight and Luke Young keeping their places in the starting XI.

Villa fans will have higher expectations than ever of the men who were left at home and O'Neill will be hoping that the pressure doesn't tell.

Sluggish

The Northern Irishman needs instant vindication and he will be expecting to achieve it against a physical but largely sluggish Stoke side.

The travelling army of fans will be relying on Sorensen if they are to get a share of the spoils.

The shot stopper has performed wonders at times for his side but surely he won't be able to stop what should be a Villa barrage.

Near Post Tommy, as he was sometimes known in the Midlands, especially after his high profile mistake against the Blues at St Andrew, is likely to get a good reception from the Holte End but needless to say he won't be so popular should he shut out his old side.

With Gabby Agbonlahor off colour in front of goal of late, Sorensen will be confident that he can defy the odds but Villa are one of the fastest sides in the Premier League and maybe he should refrain from blinking for the afternoon.

The Claret and Blue will need to be careful at set pieces as Stoke are very strong from free kicks, corners and, of course, throw ins.

But, if the Villans can stop their opponents scoring from a dead ball situation and Sorensen doesn't put in a performance better than any he ever gave in a Villa shirt, then O'Neill should get the immediate redemption he desires.
