Brad Friedel showed fans what they can expect from him this season as he saved a penalty on his Villa debut in a 1-1 draw at Reading.
The American parried Stephen Hunt's 10th minute spot kick to safety in front of the celebrating Villa faithful.
The crucial stop played a part in helping the Claret and Blue secure a plucky parity at the Madejski Stadium.
Villa were missing the injured Steve Sidwell and fellow midfielder Gareth Barry, who was left on the bench.
Gabby Agbonlahor rescued the away side after Jem Karacan had given the lead after 35 minutes.
Turkish midfielder Karacan scored just two minutes after his introduction from the bench as he reacted first when James Harper's drive hit the post.
Martin Laursen and Ashley Young went close for Villa before substitute Marc Albrighton crossed low for Agbonlahor to level matters.
