Aston Villa team news

Steven Gerrard will hope to welcome back Africa Cup of Nations participants Trezeguet and Bertrand Traore in due course, although this one will likely come too soon for the former - who was a beaten finalist.

Winger Leon Bailey is nearing a return from a thigh problem, but midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is a longer-term absentee with a serious knee injury.

Aston Villa signed Arsenal's Calum Chambers out of the blue late in the January transfer window, but it seems unlike he will feature from the start here.

Marcelo Bielsa will be sweating on the fitness of talisman Raphinha, who picked up a knock on international duty with Brazil.

A host of first-team stars are still struggling with injury and will miss out again here, namely Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo, Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips - three of whom essentially make up the spine of Leeds' strongest side.

Aston Villa vs Leeds head-to-head record

This is the first meeting between the two sides this season, with 2020/21's meetings resulting in a win each. Those were their first Premier League meetings since 2004.

Two historic English clubs, it is Villa who hold the advantage historically with 40 victories to Leeds' 32, while there have been 30 draws.

However, since 2017 it has been incredibly balanced, with two wins and two defeats each, as well as two draws.

Aston Villa vs Leeds score prediction

Since Gerrard's appointment in November, barring the defeat to Brentford, Villa have only really lost the games that you would expect them to lose - think Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Leeds have been in inconsistent form, most recently losing to strugglers Newcastle after back-to-back league victories over Burnley and West Ham.

Those track records coupled with the visitors' injury problems suggest there will only be one winner...

Prediction: Aston Villa 3-1 Leeds United
