Aston Villa vs Manchester City: Aguero on Brink of History & the Key Stats Ahead of Sunday's Game

Carabao Cup semi finalists Aston Villa and Manchester City turn their attention back to the Premier League as the pair meet at Villa Park on Sunday.

Both sides picked up impressive away results in the League Cup in midweek - Villa drawing at Leicester and City comfortably beating their Manchester rivals at Old Trafford - but in the Premier League table there is a huge gulf between the two teams; City are one point off second, while Villa are one point off the relegation zone.

But with Villa coming into a bit of form, and City shipping goals on the road, could Sunday's game throw up an upset? Thanks to Opta, here are all the best stats ahead of the weekend clash.

Villa with a Mountain to Climb

Dean Smith's side go into the fixture with a poor recent record against City. The Villans have lost nine of their last 11 Premier League meetings with the Citizens, winning 3-2 in September 2013 and drawing 0-0 in November 2015.

City have won their last two games against Aston Villa by an aggregate score of 7-0.

The Villans have a poor record against reigning Premier League champions in general, having won only three of their 49 Premier League matches against the league's defending title holders (D14 L32), losing their last 11 in a row.

It's fair to say City have been unable to reach the brilliant heights they managed during their previous two title winning campaigns this time around.

City have been trailed in matches for five hours and seven minutes in the Premier League this season - 22 minutes more than they had in their previous two campaigns combined (four hours, 45 minutes).

City have conceded 14 goals in their ten away league games this season, three more than they did in 19 games on the road last term. They’ve conceded three or more goals in three different away league games this season, as many as they had in their first three seasons under Pep Guardiola combined.

After a disastrous run of results saw them hurtle towards the relegation zone, Aston Villa have come into a bit of form of late.

Smith's side have picked up six points in their last three Premier League games (W2 D0 L1), two more than in their previous nine games in the competition (W1 D1 L7).

Agüeroooooo

Sergio Aguero

Since the start of the 2011/12 season, no player has more Premier League goals against newly-promoted teams than Sergio Agüero (31).

The Argentinian striker heads into Sunday's fixture with history in his sights. Agüero has 174 goals in total in the competition, one behind Thierry Henry on 175, who is the top scoring non-English player in Premier League history.

The Manchester City striker is in with a real chance of breaking Henry's record on Sunday, such is his impressive goal scoring tally against Villa. Agüero has scored six goals in his last four Premier League starts against Aston Villa.

Battle of the Ball Carriers

Jack Grealish

Aston Villa's talisman Jack Grealish is famed for his ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet.

In fact, the Villa man is the player with the second most ball carries in the Premier League this season (439). On Sunday, Aston Villa will face the one player in the division with more ball carries than their captain: Manchester City's Fernandinho.

The Brazilian has notched up 463 this season, a pretty impressive feat considering he has spent much of the campaign deputising as a makeshift centre back.
