Dean Smith to be confirmed as new Norwich City manager

Dean Smith will shortly be confirmed as the new manager of Norwich City - less than a week after he was sacked by Aston Villa.

The 50-year-old was given his marching orders at Villa Park following a slow start to the season, and has since been replaced by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

However, 90min understands Smith won't be out of the game for long as he is set to take over at Norwich.

The Canaries parted company with the hugely popular Daniel Farke just hours after Norwich won their first Premier League game of the season at Brentford last Saturday.

The German secured two promotions to the Premier League - both times as Championship winners - in his four years in charge at Carrow Road. The Norwich gig was Farke's first in charge of a senior team having previously only coached Borussia Dortmund's reserve side.

Following Farke's departure, Smith emerged as the clear favourite for the job after the interview process. Sporting director Stuart Webber also admired Frank Lampard, but the former Chelsea boss was never sure about moving to Norwich and so Smith became the frontrunner for the job.

Smith - who has been holidaying in New York following his dismissal by Villa - has a huge task on his hands to turn Norwich's woeful season around. They've picked up just five points from their opening 11 Premier League games and are five points adrift of safety already.

His first game in charge comes at home to Southampton on November 20 following the international break, before Wolves make the trip to Norfolk a week later. Smith's first meeting with former side Villa is only around the corner too, with Gerrard's men travelling to Carrow Road on December 14.
