Editor's ratings for the men in Claret and Blue

Last updated : 22 December 2007 By Tom Vickers
Scott Carson 5

Didn't have to make a save once again, except for Bianchi's opener. How many times will the amount of shots on target be the amount of goals the opposition score?

Wilfred Bouma 6

Not at his best today and his passing let him down on too many occasions.

Martin Laursen 9

Vila-MAD Man of the Match: The Dane was colossal once again as he seemed to be absolutely everywhere. Not only did he head everything away, but we also saw the rare site of him galloping forward with the ball.

Zat Knight 7

Did everything asked of him efficiently. He and laursen may have been tighter for the Man City goal but otherwise they formed a great pairing.

Olof Mellberg 7

Defended well enough and was not really called upon to perform stopping duties in the second half as Villa pressed more and more.

Shaun Maloney 7

Rare start for the small Scot and he looked neat and tidy as usual. Didn't have as much impact as he does as a substitute but linked with Barry well.

Gareth Barry 9

Great performance from the England man. He picked up plenty of possession in the middle and typically used the ball effectively.

Nigel Reo-Coker 8

Had a very good game and grew in stature as the match progressed. Broke up Man City possession and provided a good foundation for Villa attacks.

Ashley Young 6

Was unfortunate to be moved to the right wing from the start to accomodate Maloney. Didn't have his usual jinking impact and struggled to get in the game, even when moved to his natural position 20 minutes from time.

Gabby Agbonlahor 7

Not greatly effective and looks to have temporarily lost that golden goalscoring touch. Played well with Carew but was outshone by the big man.

John Carew 9

Brilliant performance as one of England's best and strongest defenders, Micah Richards struggled to cope with him. The Norwegian scored the opener and may have had more but for great keeping from Joe Hart.

Substitutes

Petrov (for Maloney) 6

Added rhythm as Villa charged forward in search of a winner.
