Former Liverpool Man Fabio Borini Could Return to the Premier League with Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been linked with a surprise bid for Hellas Verona striker Fabio Borini.

The Italy international is no stranger to the Premier League, having featured for Chelsea, Liverpool and Sunderland before returning to Italy with Milan.

Though Borini only made the switch from Milan to Verona this January, his short-term deal with I Gialloblu will expire this summer.

With the Villans currently light on forward options, Italian publication L’Arena has suggested that they may look to take advantage of Borini’s expiring contract and offer him a return to English football.

The report also adds, however, that Dean Smith will face a fight for Borini’s signature, with Fiorentina also circling, and Villa’s Premier League rivals Crystal Palace having demonstrated an interest.

Moreover, it was implied that Borini himself would find leaving Verona difficult given the upturn in form that he has enjoyed under the management of Ivan Jurić.

Borini has scored twice in five league games for Verona since joining, having managed the same number of goals across 15 more Serie A games with Milan last season, and he was instrumental in the shock defeat of league leaders Juventus, equalising after Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener.

Though Borini is currently Verona’s highest-paid player, he would reportedly be happy to see his wages restructured in order to continue his career renaissance in Veneto.

However, a return to England partially remains attractive to him for family reasons, having met his wife Erin in her native Liverpool during his time at Anfield, accordingly boosting Villa’s chances of snaring the forward.

While Borini’s fortunes in England were mixed during his spell there, he was responsible for several goals against high-profile opposition, sending Sunderland fans at Wembley into raptures as he gave them an early lead in their 3-1 League Cup final defeat to Manchester City in 2014.

Having struggled for goalscoring form in the Premier League, he is likely gagging for one last opportunity to show what he can do.
