Manchester City unable to sign both Jack Grealish & Harry Kane this summer

Manchester City would not be able to afford Harry Kane this summer should they complete a Premier League-record deal for Jack Grealish.

Almost two months ago Kane publicly hinted that he wanted to leave Tottenham and behind closed doors he has been agitating for a move away. He is one of the best strikers on the planet, topping both the Premier League goal and assist charts last season.

Gabriel Jesus is currently the only recognised centre-forward at the Etihad Stadium and back in June City made an £100m bid for Kane which was swiftly rejected by Spurs. Although they remain keen on the signing, the Citizens have since turned their attentions to one of his England teammates, Grealish.

A Premier League-record bid was tabled for the midfielder recently and, as reported by 90min last week, all parties are increasingly confident that the move will go ahead.

Although City are eager to sign both players, Grealish’s arrival would likely spell the end of their pursuit of Kane. According to the Manchester Evening News, the club would not be able to afford a second marquee signing without significant player sales first. The news is a blow for Kane who remains extremely keen on moving to the Etihad this summer, despite Spurs’ insistence that they will not sell.

City do have enough sellable assets to fund both deals but finding suitors in a post-pandemic market will be another matter entirely. At the beginning of the summer Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Aymeric Laporte were among the players said to be frustrated by their lack of playing time.

While plenty of clubs would be delighted to sign them, finding the funds would be challenging. This means that for now, Kane looks likely to remain at Tottenham for the upcoming season.
