Steven Gerrard 'proud' of players after first win as Aston Villa manager

Steven Gerrard has hailed his Aston Villa squad after an impressive 2-0 win over high-flying Brighton on Saturday.

The win came courtesy of two second half goals from Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings - look up Watkins' goal if you haven't seen it yet, it was a worldie - and gave Gerrard a perfect start to life at Villa Park after moving to the club from Rangers recently.

Speaking to the press after the game, the new manager expressed his delight at his squad's performance and their willingness to put his gameplan into action (via BBC Sport): "This was a big week and a big game on the back of losing five [in a row], so it is a mixture of excitement and relief and pride.

"I can't be any more proud of the players. Everything we have asked them to do they have followed the instructions.

"I love seeing the players happy and smiling. We were a bit tense at times but I thought we finished the game extremely strongly. We have got a lot of things to build on. In time we will become stronger and grow and get better."

Gerrard also discussed his celebrations after both goals, stating: "I will always be as authentic as I can. If anyone doubts me watch me after those goals. That is real.

"They are the buzzes, the highs you miss as a player. They are why you want to stay in the game. They are my medicine."

Next up for Gerrard and Aston Villa is a trip to Selhurst Park to face a high-flying Crystal Palace side on Saturday 27th November.
